Literature has different genres and each of them is unique to the other. Let us take, for example, the genre which is Poetry. Poetry is a language which expresses the thought, imagination, and insights of the human soul. It uses the formal properties of the specific words it chooses. There are many kinds of poetry. The first one is the Lyric Poetry which is the utterance of the heart in a poetic form. It can be in the form of a song, sonnet, elegy, ode, and simple lyric. The next kind is Narrative Poetry, which tells a story following a chronological pattern of events. Examples of which are ballad, metrical tale, and metrical romance. The third kind of poetry is Dramatic Poetry, which is closely related to drama. It can be in the form of dramatic monologue, soliloquy, and character sketch. The last kind of poetry is the Prose Poetry which uses only prose.
Another genre of literature is known as Essay. It is the discussion based on the personal perspective of the author of a certain topic. This is also popularly used in the different colleges and universities as part of their examinations simply because it encourages the expression of free ideas by the one taking the exam about a chosen topic which would be the basis for grading. Essays may come in the form of memoirs or epistles.
Next in the list of the different genres of literature is known as the Novel. It is a long story that is primarily written in prose. Another genre of literature is known as Drama or Play. It is more concerned with the dialogue among the characters involved with a goal of putting up a very dramatic performance. Aside from theatres, Drama has reached the world of television and radio. Very popular in the television nowadays are dramatic shows which every country, by the way, has. The beauty of drama is that it can capture the hearts of its audience making them feel that they are part of the play. It sort of takes the audience to a fantasy world wherein they could imagine what if they were the ones who were in the situation of the actors and actresses.
These are just only some genres of literature. Since its scope is too wide to be discussed in this article, only a few genres of literature were tackled. Nevertheless, it is clear that literature itself as a form of art is purely beautiful. Each genre is unique and has its own set of flavor. Literature also proves that it is very important in the society. Therefore, it is only proper that it should be given a lot of importance not only by the readers around the world, but also by the government. Art and literature is significant in more ways than one so the government must do its part to promote its advocacy and support its campaign. Literature must be preserved and continually enriched. Its importance is far too great to be neglected for with literature, people of different color and race are united.
